There is no shortage of heat here, but heat alone is not eroticism. Shock is doing most of the labour. The twin twist, the betrayal pivot, the instant conversion from rage to arousal—it’s escalation without reflection.

Transgression is not the same as depth. When erotic writing relies solely on taboo, it risks becoming spectacle rather than transformation.

I’m less interested in how loud it gets, and more interested in what it costs.

This is a thoughtful critique, and I appreciate you taking the time to articulate it rather than just reacting to the surface of the story.

I agree that taboo alone can create intensity but not necessarily meaning. Sometimes I intentionally write pieces that lean into shock or immediacy, almost like emotional flash fiction, but I also write about not just what happens between characters, but what it changes inside them, and what it costs them afterward. It’s difficult in such short writing.

I’m still a new writer, so I’m continually exploring in my work. Comments like this help me think more deliberately about how they are perceived.
